Critical Mass – February 27

February 24, 2009

Hey guys, let’s ride!

Critical Mass has officially been going for more than a year – and in 2009, there are no more excuses.  I know we can grow the group and make it a big deal in Topeka.

Meet up at 5:30 at the Boobie Trap Bar (6th and Washburn) this Friday, and we’ll take over the city.  Bring a friend!

Goodbye, batteries!

February 20, 2009

So, I’m way behind the trend here, but I spotted a cool light on a fixie on flickr:

And apparently you can get them here: http://www.goodbyebatteries.com/home/

They are powered by magnets on the wheels.  No cables, no batteries. Cool!

…but they are $43.95 a set.  Guess I’ll keep thinking about it….

The Cabin Fever Challenge

February 9, 2009

From http://www.wam-sag-man.org/cabinfeverchallenge.php

Tired of winter and looking for an early spring ride and a place to buy, sell trade bicycling items? Then join us on Saturday, March 28 for a day of bicycling and fun in beautiful Pottawatomie County, Kansas.  The 5th Annual Cabin Fever Challenge will begin and end at the Wamego Middle School, Wamego, KS. New this year is a Bike Swap Meet.

Also new this year is a ‘Huffy Bike Toss’. A local bicyclist is donating an old bike of his that will be used/abused for this event. Cost: $1 per throw.  Location: 1pm, basketball courts (NW corner of school parking lot). Rules: the bike has to leave the ground and wherever it stops, we measure from the “throw line” (marked with tape or chalk) to the nearest point of the bike.  Prizes:  Three individuals with the farthest throws win: 1st: T-shirt, 2nd: Spotlit, 3rd: Spokelit.

Net proceeds from the ride are deposited in the 501c3 WAM-SAG-MAN Trail account in the Wamego Community Foundation (www.thewcf.org).

Cabin Fever Challenge includes three paved routes:

54 mile Route

By the way, we had 13 riders for February’s First Friday ride! We would have had four more, but technical difficulties stood in the way.

Join KanBikeWalk for Advocacy Day on Feb. 4th

February 4, 2009

from http://www.kanbikewalk.com/

KanBikeWalk’s first Advocacy Day is scheduled for February 4th, 2009 at the state capitol in Topeka, Kansas.

Please join us as we meet with state-level elected officials to ask for their help in creating a more bikeable and walkable Kansas. When you speak personally with your own elected officials and they hear you talk about your passion for these issues, it can make a tremendously positive impression.

Our elected officials all know that someone, somewhere supports better bicycling and walking. But they usually think in the back of their mind that it’s someone somewhere else — on the other side of the state, or in a big city, or a small city, or maybe people who live in pleasant rural areas.

So when they meet you and make that personal connection with someone from their hometown, it really changes things.

We will make personal visits to Kansas legislators and their staff in the capitol. These personal visits are by far the most productive way for us to build support for bicycling and walking issues in our state. KanBikeWalk will provide printed materials you can use as a guide when talking, and can leave with them for later review.

We’ll start the day with a briefing at 8:30 a.m. in the first floor rotunda. Look for the folks with bicycle pins and KanBikeWalk logos!

If you’re unable to attend Advocacy Day in person, you can still help! Emailing or calling your legislators can also be a very effective way to make your voice heard. (If you’re not sure who represents you, you can use the Find Your Legislator app to check.)

If you’re interested in helping out, please contact KanBikeWalk president Gina Poertner at gksport@gmail.com or 620-342-2477.
